Gunnison County is one of the premier areas in Colorado to begin your next elk hunt. With large elk herds, it is relatively easy to draw an elk tag in the area. Gunnison County is primarily made up of three GMUs
(Game Management Units Map) – Units 54, 55, and 551 with many surrounding units that dip into the county. In 2010 the elk herds for units 54, 55, and 551 were above management limits giving elk hunters a chance at getting two licenses during the season for management purposes. However, the draw-only licenses have decreased now that elk herds are reaching a stabilized population.
